Created!

I have always liked photography. This year I competed in therealljidol and greatly enjoyed that, and then, just for fun I took a digital photography class at the local community college. Having a prompt to take photos for was a lot of fun, and then I got to thinking, why not take the successful and fun framework of LJ Idol and make it all about photography! The idea for this community was born!

I'm not a big fan of all the "competition" communities out there where people exercise their aggressive competitiveness and need to win ego pissing contests, but some light competition can be fun. Moreover, the fact that people get eliminated keeps a fire under your rump to keep on top of your game. Hence the reason this is modeled after LJ Idol, and hence the reason idol isn't in the name. I want the emphasis to be on the journey, not the end.

How It's Going to Work
The plan is to have a weekly prompt, for which one is to take pictures. One will post their submission in an entry in their own LJ and leave a comment linking to it in the official submission entry in this community. There will then be a vote and then... the lowest vote getters will be free to work on their skillz until next season. (:
Prompt's may be extremely specific ("squirrels frolicking in the twilight on a Tuesday!" ...jk.. probably) or extremely broad ("animals"?), they may be specific things, concepts ("contrasting colours"), methods ("long exposure"?) ... anything related to what or how you take a picture really!
The issue of photo manipulation will surely come up. I personally like to crop and adjust the saturation a bit on all my photos, but some people think even that is "cheating" (even outside of any kind of competitive setting!). I'm thinking I'll change around what photo manipulation is allowed on different prompts. Cropping I personally think is always okay. Saturation adjustment can drastically change a picture, but often I feel is necessary to get a photo closer to what it actually looked like in real life ... it can definitely be used to make a sunset or such look much more spectacular than it "really" looked though.
Additionally, while sometimes the prompt will be to take the requisite photo in the ensuing week, I'm thinking sometimes any photo you took in the last six months, or since the competition started, or X period of time will be in order. Sometimes maybe I'll tell you about a prompt that's due in more than a week to give you time. I'll change it up, you know. (:

Who Can Participate?
Everyone! I'm hoping we get people from professionals to people running around with camera phones. In fact, I'm really hoping we get some people with camera phones who barely care, so that we have some easily explained eliminations in the beginning that there won't be hard feelings about. (:

Judging & Moderating
Like in LJ Idol, once the polls go up linking to all the submissions, usually anyone will be allowed to vote. I think I'll have more community-only or participant-only votes than LJ Idol did, as they are a good control against people strong-arming the vote with huge friends-lists.

Lastly, let's talk about me. I _AM_ going to participate, because, dammit, the reason I'm creating this is because I want to do it. I am going to try my hardest, however, to guard against any possible perception that I am giving myself an advantage.
I am not a professional photographer, or the ultimate authority on it. As such, I would more than welcome any suggestions anyone with more (or less) experience than me has on good photography prompts, or anything else relevant. We certainly don't want them to be limited to things I know how to do, so please recommend prompts!

Provisionally I'm setting a start date for Friday, July 24th. That's the last weekend of July and about a month away. Hopefully that will give us plenty of time to flesh this out and attract participants.

Special thanks to therealljidol and its fearless moderator clauderainsrm! I'm going to be shamelessly modeling LJ Shootout after his Idol, but that's because the latter is awesome and you should participate in that too. (:
